What a labour of love! When we took on the renovation of this run-down Victorian property, we knew we had our work cut out. We suspected these two attic bedrooms would probably be the most difficult to tackle due to the level of disrepair – and we were right!
We stripped everything back and started with the first-fix electrics. Then our plasterers did a fantastic job, first by fitting insulated plasterboard, followed by the challenge of plastering multiple angles, curves, and high ceilings. We were amazed by their skill – the finish had to be perfect, and they truly proved themselves to be perfectionists!
After plastering, the radiators were installed and we painted everything white. The fresh plaster drank up the paint like water, giving us a clean slate to choose a colour scheme, lighting, and to map out where the bedroom furniture would go.
Sanding the original floors took quite some time, but it was so worth it when they came back to life. Their gorgeous warm tones were revealed after years of being hidden beneath carpet.
Next came the planning and building of the bedroom furniture, carefully designed around the unique features of each room. After much deliberation, we chose Grey Clubhouse Oak by Krono Design, complemented with black handles. A versatile colour with a tactile matt texture, its neutral tones add a calm yet contemporary feel to each space.
Just a little bit of detail: when cutting the boards, I made sure the grain matched and flowed seamlessly through each drawer front.
To complete the look, we added plain white wall lights (a bargain at £10 each on Amazon!), eye-catching ceiling fittings, and a few table lamps to softly light the room for a cosy, welcoming atmosphere.
We’re thrilled with the results – and so are our two very happy teenagers (in fact, we haven’t seen much of them since!).
