Christmas is here again, and many of us make a huge effort decorating our homes for the festive season. But why do we so often leave out the kitchen, when it’s the centre of Christmas dinner operations?
You and your family will probably be spending a lot of time in your kitchen over the festive season, so it’s time to bring some Christmas cheer into the heart of the home! Here are some top Christmas decorating tips we’ve picked up in our visits to kitchens in Liverpool, to turn your kitchen into a winter wonderland.
Choose your decorations wisely
Before you start decking out the kitchen, it’s important to remember that this is not like any other room in the home. As there will be a lot of food preparation going on here, you need to choose decorations which will not get in the way or present any kind of health hazard. You should also choose Christmas decorations which are relatively easy to wipe clean, in case of any spillages!
Once you are satisfied that your decorations are safe and hygienic, it’s time to get creative and festive in the kitchen.
Go for a natural look
Your kitchen Christmas decorations don’t have to be extensive. If you want to keep things natural, you can easily give your kitchen a festive feel by bringing in some holly, ivy and mistletoe. These can be used to decorate pelmets and cabinet tops, and also look great twined around pendant lights.
Wreaths are another way of bringing nature into the kitchen for Christmas. These can be hung on the backs of doors or suspended from the ceiling, and if you want to take the festive theme further, you can decorate them with baubles and ornaments before hanging them up.
Light up your shelving
Fairy lights are a great way of adding some Christmas cheer. These are ideal for stringing along the edges of open shelving and the tops of your kitchen cabinets. If you are lucky enough to have an open fireplace in your kitchen, you can also decorate this with a string of lights, too.
Open shelving gives you another possibility in the form of a Christmas display. You can dedicate one or more shelves to the theme, displaying seasonal ornaments, greenery and even tinsel.
Spruce up your notice board
Many homes have a family notice board in the kitchen. This can easily be kitted out for Christmas with a display of Christmas cards and a border of spruce-fir. If you want an even more seasonal feel, decorate the fir with baubles and fairy lights.
Enjoy the scent of the season
Scented candles are ideal for bringing the spirit of Christmas into the kitchen. These can be placed on any practical surface – remember, you will probably need to keep your kitchen worktops free, as you will need as much food preparation space as possible for Christmas dinner! However, the table, shelves and window ledges are perfect spots for candles.
Choose seasonal aromas such as frankincense, cinnamon and cranberry for a cosy Christmas feel. And always supervise candles while they are burning.
Dine in festive style
Your kitchen table is the perfect place to make a splash when it comes to decorating for Christmas. A bright red tablecloth with gold napkins and candles will get everybody into the Christmas spirit, especially if you add some festive-themed crockery!
Now all that’s left to do is enjoy your Christmas dinner!
